Summary
A series of interlinking economic distortions is driving the Argentine government to search for increasingly creative financial management tools. These trends have been building for years and point to serious challenges that in the long run the state may not be able to control. In the short run, they complicate Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's efforts to position her party and supporters ahead of the October legislative elections because the current capital controls are increasingly upsetting the country's middle classes.
