Myanmar's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has faced criticism from U.N. member states and human rights activists around the world for her handling of the violence against members of the Rohingya ethnic minority in Rakhine state. But others have defended her calculated silence, citing her government's lack of power over the country's military under the 2008 constitution.
