Balancing Economic and Social Concerns in Peru's Mining Sector

Pervasive anti-mining sentiment and increasing opposition to upcoming projects have strained Peru's crucial mining sector. Demonstrations, some of which have turned violent, show no signs of dissipating, and more protests are planned in several mining areas on May 27-28. Though the demonstrations have yet to hurt the country's relatively strong economic growth, they could undermine the country's attractiveness to investors over the long term.
