The Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — currently depend on Russia for energy supplies, most notably oil and natural gas. The countries had been discussing the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the region but have not been able to agree on a location for such a facility. Latvia recently proposed postponing the LNG terminal in favor of constructing a natural gas pipeline linking Lithuania and Poland, which would give the Baltics some energy diversification. However, political obstacles likely will prevent the proposal from making any progress anytime soon.
