Bolivia: Tensions Reach a Head in Cochabamba
Jan 13, 2007 | 00:10 GMT
Summary
A violent clash late Jan. 11 in Cochabamba, a Bolivian city southeast of the capital of La Paz, left two dead and many injured, and effectively shut down the city. Supporters of Bolivian President Evo Morales who are seeking Cochabamba department Gov. Manfred Reyes Villa's resignation fought with Reyes Villa supporters. Tensions between those loyal to the president and the opposition have always run high, but the recent confrontation indicates the situation is not likely to improve any time soon. Morales' hands are tied, as he must work to court the opposition while keeping his support base satisfied.
