Canada, Chile: Unions, Strikes and Commodity Prices

Setbacks for two major mining operations in Chile and Canada in negotiations with unions on Jan. 29-31 highlight the growing influence of mining unions as global commodity prices have continued to rise with demand. This rise has put unions in a comfortable negotiating position, meaning the Chilean and Canadian examples will not be the only instances of unions taking advantage of the bullish commodities outlook this year.
