Chad: A Rebel Advance Toward the Capital

Chadian rebel group Union of Forces for Democracy and Development has advanced toward the capital, N'Djamena, from its bases in the Chadian-Sudanese border region, according to Jan. 31 media reports. The move on N'Djamena threatens President Idriss Deby's grip on power, could jeopardize Chad's southern oil fields and complicates the search for a resolution to Sudan's Darfur conflict.
