Chile Undertakes Reform to Fight Anarchism

Summary

A little more than two weeks after the worst bombing in Chile in over two decades, the government in Santiago is discussing security reforms to update its counterterrorism laws and expand the reach of its intelligence agency. Change could come before the end of the year, but it will take time for the reforms to have an effect.

In the meantime, despite several arrests, the threat of anarchist attacks in Chile has not abated. Evidence suggests there are more active cells and bombmakers who may be connected to former Marxist terrorists and international radical anarchists. With Santiago working to reform the intelligence and justice systems, the threat to soft targets could get worse before it gets better.

While recent bombings will motivate Santiago to reform its counterterrorism laws, the threat of anarchist attacks will remain....
