British Gas is selling its shares in Kazakhstan's Kashagan oil field to two state-owned Chinese companies. However, for the consortium developing Kashagan, the involvement of new partners does not brighten prospects for developing an export route. And although China can count on Kazakhstan to help diversify its energy sources, making the supplies secure remains a challenge that will require a much larger outlay of resources than the $1.2 billion it spent to obtain BG's share of Kashagan.
