Summary
Since the April 16 disappearance of Colombian paramilitary chieftain Carlos Castano in an apparent assassination attempt, it had been speculated that he escaped alive, staged the hit against himself so he could vanish and even that he surrendered to the U.S. government. Security analysts now believe it is probable that Castano's closest colleagues killed him, fearing he would surrender and become an informant against them.
