DRC: The Continuing Battle

Summary

Some 53 people have been killed in fresh fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ituri province, despite the recent formation of a power-sharing government in Kinshasa that includes leaders of the country's two main rebel groups. Ituri province stands apart from the rest of the country as a battleground because of its mineral wealth — including diamonds and a suspected reserve of oil. Conflict is likely to continue in the region so long as various groups see an opportunity to seize control of the wealth and establish leverage with the fledgling new government in Kinshasa.
