DRC, Uganda: Tensions on the Border
Oct 6, 2005 | 02:37 GMT
Summary
Ugandan Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa on Oct. 5 dismissed the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) Oct. 4 call for the imposition of sanctions on Uganda after Kampala said it would invade the DRC if the latter failed to disarm rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army who had recently arrived in the DRC. Though it is unlikely that large-scale fighting is imminent, the rise in rhetoric and tensions regarding the rebel problem greatly increase the chances for a military confrontation in the region.
