Ecuador: Gutierrez Ousts Court, Clouds His Future

President Lucio Gutierrez of Ecuador fired the Supreme Court and declared a national state of emergency at 9:30 p.m. local time in Quito on April 15. He claimed his actions were justified because protests in Quito against his government threatened to escalate out of control.
