Egypt: Elections and Future of the Muslim Brotherhood

Egyptian parliamentary elections held April 7-8 attracted scant foreign notice and extremely low voter turnout at home. Unlike in 2005, when it made gains that shocked the Egypt's ruling party, the opposition Muslim Brotherhood wound up boycotting these elections in the face of a government crackdown. But the state security apparatus cannot be relied on to stem discontent forever, meaning the Muslim Brotherhood’s strategy of patience could eventually pay off.
