In 1967, Israel occupied the Sinai Peninsula, controlling the buffer territory between it and Egypt. It was returned to Egypt as part of the Camp David Accords in 1978 and the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. While the conflict with Hezbollah along Israel's northern border has been most prominent in recent years, Egypt presents the most dangerous potential threat to the existence of the Israeli state, as it did in 1967 and 1973. The political deals made at the end of the 1970s have formed the foundation of Israeli security for three decades.
