Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood: Out With the Old Guard, in With the New?
Jan 12, 2004 | 21:36 GMT
Summary
The head of the Muslim Brotherhood — Egypt's largest Islamist organization — Mamoun al-Hudaibi, died Jan. 9 of natural causes. The death of al-Hudaibi, who was one of the last of the group's old guard, likely will allow younger generations to assume a more prominent role within the MB and Egyptian politics as a whole. This could enable the group to break free from its containment as an outlawed organization and perhaps surface as a more potent political force. Winds of change are sweeping the region, and the potential to impact the internal politics of many Arab states — including Egypt — is palpable.
