Summary

Egypt has been experiencing two types of unrest since the July 3 military coup that ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi: jihadist militancy in Sinai and violent clashes between the Muslim Brotherhood and its political opponents and security forces. The army's efforts to quell both simultaneously could blur the lines between the two groups and cause more chaos in the country.
