Peru's voters appear to be lashing out against the policies of President Ollanta Humala — namely, his policies for the important mining sector. In fact, many believe he has not followed through on his campaign promises to improve social inequality in the country, and the election results reflect that belief: Early indicators show that anti-mining candidates are gaining ground in many regional contests. Though the results are not final, fringe parties, which prioritize regional interests over national interests, are clearly gaining power throughout the country.
