Summary
Sri Lankan officials in the ruling Freedom Alliance Party have recognized the Tamil Tiger rebels as the sole political representatives of Sri Lanka's Tamil minority. This significant shift in policy preceded the May 10 visit of Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Peterson and could pave the way for renewed peace negotiations. There has been no word yet whether the Freedom Alliance rank-and-file support the shift.
