The Sinaloa Federation is one of the most powerful criminal organizations operating in Mexico. The group has a tremendous amount of influence throughout much of western Mexico, as well as the northern border regions. The Sinaloa Federation is led by Mexico's most-wanted man, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, who commands his own personal trafficking network in addition to controlling the federation of similar networks headed by his top lieutenants Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia and Juan Jose "El Azul" Esparragoza Moreno. The group took a large hit when its No. 3, Ignacio "El Nacho" Coronel Villarreal, was killed in a Mexican military operation in Guadalajara, Jalisco state, on July 29.
