Hungary: Hints of a 'Greater Hungary'

Summary

The center-right Hungarian party Fidesz won a two-thirds majority in elections held April 25. The mandate gives Fidesz considerable power to carry out its plans, including granting citizenship to ethnic Hungarians living in neighboring countries. This plan could be seen as a step to ensure greater security for Hungary should its current protectors — the European Union and NATO — weaken. Because of the history and geography of Central Europe, the plan could make Hungary's neighbors nervous.
