Iraq: Al-Zarqawi's Civil War Bid

An audiotape was released July 6 — allegedly by al Qaeda's chief in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi — that announces the formation of a new militant unit, the Omar Corps, to "eradicate" Iraq's largest Shiite militia, the Badr Brigades. Ironically, al-Zarqawi's attempt to instigate civil war in Iraq between the jihadists and Iraqi Shiite militias is completely in sync with the U.S. strategy for the insurgency.
