Iraq: Militias, Provincial Polls and the Ethno-Sectarian Struggle

Summary

The Iraqi Cabinet has agreed on a law that would prohibit groups with militias from partaking in the provincial polls to be held in the fall. The law is meant to contain Muqtada al-Sadr's movement in the coming provincial polls and the Sunnis both politically and militarily. It could limit the al-Sadrites' successes, more or less, but in targeting the Sunnis the law will only complicate Iraq's ethno-sectarian strife.

A law that would keep groups with militias from taking part in Iraq's upcoming provincial elections will end up aggravating ethno-sectarian tensions....
