During a recent visit to Baghdad, Turkish President Abdullah Gul reportedly promised to double the amount of water allotted to Iraq from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Though his pledge would seem to be good news for Iraqi grain farmers, who are in the throes of a drought, it also highlights the degree of influence that Turkey has gained over its neighbor to the south.
