Iraq's Prime Minister Holds on to Power Despite Opposition

Reports from Baghdad indicate the possibility of a coup under way in Iraq, led by units loyal to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who seeks to remain in power even as his political position becomes increasingly untenable. A divisive figure, al-Maliki has received much criticism from his own party as well as the Iraqi parliament and from outside players such as Iran, all of which are trying to create a new government without him at the helm.
