Iraq's Shia Try to Quiet Sunni Unrest

Summary

The government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is hoping to quell a resurgence of unrest among the country's Sunni minority by increasing the salaries of Sunni militiamen. In the short term, al-Maliki will likely be able to prevent the agitation from growing into a full-blown insurgency. However, in the long term, concessions made now will embolden the Sunnis to press the Shia-dominated central government for a more equitable share of political power.
