Israel, PNA: Border Maneuvers and Politicking

Israel declared its border with the Gaza Strip an international border Sept. 21. While the move is being hailed as a tangible step toward the creation of a Palestinian state, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is strategically laying down the legal framework to secure Israel's grip over the Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, Hamas political leader Mohammad Ghazal hinted for the first time that the group could amend its charter to remove the goal of seeking the destruction of the state of Israel. As we forecast, Hamas is gradually toning down its rhetoric to pursue its goal of becoming a legitimate political entity.
