Japan: Deficit Reduction, but Debt Still Looms

Summary
The Japanese government announced Dec. 20 that it could eliminate its budget deficit one to two years earlier than its previous target date of 2011. Although positive news, it does not mean Japan's economic troubles are over — especially considering the East Asian nation's 767 trillion yen ($6.55 trillion) national debt.
