Japan: The Ruling Party Survives its First Shakeup

Japan's prime minister presented his new Cabinet on June 8. The lineup is remarkably similar to the previous Cabinet, with 11 ministers returning. With the announcement, the ruling Democratic Party of Japan shows that it has survived its first reshuffle. Difficulties lie ahead, however, including geopolitical challenges that will remain intransigent regardless of who governs.
