Summary
Tensions can be expected when Uzbek President Islam Karimov and his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev, meet Sept. 6-7 in Astana for their first bilateral summit in two years. Although Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan share a long border and are considered Central Asia's two most powerful states, their leaders rarely meet, especially one-on-one. The leaders will discuss a number of critical issues, and they will not necessarily agree on most matters.
