Kenya: Terrorist Attack Underway at Nairobi Hotel

The upscale Dusit Hotel in the Westlands neighborhood of Nairobi became the target of an armed assault on the afternoon of Jan. 15. Kenyan authorities and witnesses are describing the incident, which is still ongoing, as a terrorist attack. According to eye-witnesses, least four assailants armed with assault weapons are involved. Police forces have blocked off the immediate area, which contains an upscale hotel, a bank, and several office spaces. The National Police Service's inspector general confirmed that there were casualties -- though not how many -- and that one of the gunmen had been detained. Gunshots and a number of explosions were reported around 3 p.m. local time, with a series of vehicle fires casting a pall over the scene.
