Kuwait's Dissolved Parliament Clears the Way for Stalled Economic Reforms

The dissolution of Kuwait's parliament and suspension of several constitutional articles will enable the country to pass some economic reforms, which could open the door to external borrowing to support economic growth and diversification. However, parliament will likely be reinstated after those reforms are implemented, at which point political deadlock will likely return to the country. On May 10, Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah dissolved the country's National Assembly and suspended some constitutional articles for no more than four years. The dissolution of the assembly came after the April 4 snap elections and days before the first scheduled meeting of the National Assembly. Reportedly, however, several elected lawmakers imposed conditions for their participation, to which the emir declined to agree.
