Labor Unrest Threatens Roh's Support

Summary
South Korean truck drivers have suspended their strike outside the POSCO steel plant in Pohang after five days of disrupting shipments of steel to major manufacturers. The strike was just the latest challenge to new President Roh Moo Hyun, who has faced a North Korean nuclear crisis, the restructuring of U.S. Forces in Korea and the SARS epidemic in addition to economic concerns. Roh, like his predecessor, is beginning to take a less sanguine view of labor unions, despite his status as a former labor activist, and this — coupled with other seeming reversals of his pre-election policies — now risks alienating his political support base.
