It does not matter whether AUC leader Carlos Castano is dead or alive. The United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia has collapsed, and disarmament talks are effectively over. As a result, Colombian cities could experience more violence during the coming year, as paramilitaries engaged in drug trafficking ally themselves with crime gangs and rebel groups against extradition to the United States.
