The Schengen Agreement allows countries to temporarily reintroduce border controls under certain circumstances.

With the spike in refugees and other immigrants arriving in Europe over the past two years, many Schengen countries have rushed to control the flow of people by using special temporary exemptions. When we published our last map of border controls within the bloc in February, seven member countries reserved the right to perform border checks. Now there's one fewer, and the remaining six have renewed their declarations -- perhaps for the last time....
