Mexico: Turning to the IMF?

Summary

Mexico has announced it will open a line of credit with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) worth $47 billion. The move carries some risks but gives Mexico more options as it seeks to respond to the international financial crisis. Mexico would be the largest country to call on the IMF in the wake of the crisis, and thus the request would increase pressure on IMF reserves dramatically.
