Myanmar: A Tentative Timeline for Rohingya Repatriation

Myanmar has agreed to a timeline for the return of the 740,000 Rohingya refugees that have fled to Bangladesh since October 2016. During a Jan. 15 meeting, the two countries hashed out the details of a November deal and set an initial pace of 1,500 returnees per week, with the hope that they will steadily speed up the process so that all refugees are returned within two years. Myanmar state media reported that it is already constructing the first of two camps in Rakhine state, meant to temporarily house around 30,000 of the returnees after they have been vetted at assessment camps. The repatriation process is reportedly set to begin as planned on Jan. 23....
