North America: The State of NAFTA Talks, One Year Later

Representatives from Mexico and the United States resumed NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) talks Aug. 17. The day before, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the lead negotiator for the United States, said that he was hopeful that the two sides could reach a breakthrough over the next few days. But Mexico's next economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, said that other countries needed to be "flexible" in the talks, likely referencing the United States' firm stance on several issues. A breakthrough between Mexico and the United States could come soon, but NAFTA talks will remain a slow affair until U.S. sticking points with Canada can be resolved....
