Summary
Fighters loyal to Ivorian opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner of Cote d'Ivoire's hotly contested presidential election in 2010, are closing in on Abidjan, the main support base for incumbent Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo. The advance, part of a dayslong offensive, comes as news has broken that Gbagbo's army chief of staff and his family have sought refuge at the South African Embassy. The pressure on Gbagbo is increasing, but whether or not he steps down, it will be a while before Ouattara can take over without serious security concerns.
