Summary

Pakistani officials reported Jan. 16 that Army Aviation units launched an airstrike on a suspected militant camp along the country's northwestern border with Afghanistan. With Washington frequently pressuring Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf to do more to crack down on Taliban/jihadist elements who have sought refuge in his country — plus a simmering homegrown jihadist presence in Pakistan's northwest — Musharraf is feeling compelled to take action. However, it is quite likely the attack was carried out and presented in a way to satisfy both Washington and Islamabad.
