India concluded a joint military exercise May 17 with an airdrop of 700 troops from Il-76 and An-32 transport aircraft. The exercise, less than 100 miles from the Pakistani border, highlights India's increasing desire to project power through rapid-reaction forces to bolster its strategic aims in places such as Central Asia. Its desire, however, will remain unfulfilled because of Pakistan.
