Peru: President May Soon Face Another Impeachment Vote

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski may soon face the threat of impeachment a second time. On Feb. 1, leftist opposition parties New Peru and Broad Front presented separate motions before Congress alleging that Kuczynski had abandoned his duties, an impeachable offense. New Peru claims that the president, in an act of corruption, failed to report consulting payments received from Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht. According to Broad Front, meanwhile, Kuczynski's recent deal with lawmakers from the Popular Force party to release former President Alberto Fujimori from prison violated the rights of Peruvians whose family members were killed by the state under his watch. ...
