Peru: Toledo's Troubles
May 4, 2005 | 22:52 GMT
Summary
Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo Manrique is approaching a political crisis that could force his resignation. A congressional committee report accuses Toldeo of participating in a criminal conspiracy and violating the public trust. The report came after the committee investigated forged voter signatures used to register Toledo's Peru Posible party so he could run for president in 2000. The first allegation is an impeachable offense, if the full Congress approves the report. Toledo is not political road kill yet, but his chances of leaving the presidency before the next election in April 2006 have increased sharply in the past 24 hours.
