Philippines: Arroyo's Long Impeachment
Jul 27, 2005 | 01:00 GMT
Summary
Impeachment proceedings against Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo bogged down July 26 — one day after the opposition filed its amended complaint against her. For now, it appears the opposition will not be able to move the impeachment forward as quickly as it had hoped, but the process likely will stay alive as long as it provides Arroyo with political cover from any "people power" demonstrations. The process will be a long one, and it probably will segue into some form of negotiations over revising the Philippine constitutional charter. As long as the opposition does not uncover evidence unequivocally implicating Arroyo, she likely will survive.
