Philippines: A Rallying Point for the Opposition?

Summary

In a major change of opinion, Susan Roces, widow of late Philippine presidential candidate Fernando Poe, Jr., said June 29 that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's apology for improperly speaking to an election official would not suffice and that Arroyo must resign from the presidency. Although Roces says she will not lead a movement to unseat the government, she may become the figure the opposition can rally around in order to oust Arroyo — thus mitigating one of the opposition's key shortcomings.
