Philippines: A Tug of War at the Mines

Heavily armed New People's Army rebels attacked a Philippine mining operation in the gold-rich region of Diwalwal on Mindanao island Feb. 6, killing two of the mine owner’s bodyguards. Local money and a tug of war over mining ownership rights between the central and provincial governments are the most likely motivations behind the attack.
