Protesters continued to clash Feb. 3 in several cities around Egypt after pro- President Hosni Mubarak protesters attempted to take Tahrir Square from anti-Mubarak protesters Feb. 2. Other notable developments involved foreign interests in Cairo, where security forces fired tear gas at protesters near the U.S. Embassy, and other protesters allegedly threatened foreign journalists. So far, the protests have not directly targeted foreign interests, so it is noteworthy to mark the beginning of such targeting, however minor that is. Also, the number of security guards was increased at the Ain Sukhara terminal of the Suez-Mediterranean oil pipeline (Sumei) on Feb. 3 — a move likely to shore up defenses at strategic infrastructure. There has not been any indication that protesters are attempting to sabotage parts of Egypt's infrastructure such as pipelines, canals or railways.
