As the United States began reopening state by state from the pandemic lockdown, the number and rate of infections increased. By June, several states had surpassed previous peak infections and the nation was experiencing 40,000 new cases a day. By the end of the month, experts including Anthony Fauci, head of The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned the number of infections could rise to 100,000 new cases a day.
