Summary
Russia and Denmark will soon discuss holding joint naval exercises, Russian Baltic Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Viktor Chirkov said Aug. 13. The exercises can be seen as part of a series of overtures Moscow has made toward Copenhagen. Denmark's geographic position gives it control over traffic entering and leaving the Baltic Sea, and thus makes Denmark crucial to Russia militarily and economically. Furthermore, Denmark's position as a relative outsider within the European Union makes it an attractive target for Moscow's diplomatic attentions.
