Russian state natural gas monopoly Gazprom reduced its natural gas exports to Europe Jan. 18 to deal with extremely cold temperatures and energy requirements within Russia. Had this happened a month earlier, the Europeans would have been sympathetic, but in light of the recent crisis with Ukraine, the European Union is putting itself under increased pressure to diversify energy sources.
